Why a Lock Change Is the Right Call — and When to Act
A lock change is the definitive solution when ownership or occupancy of a property changes hands. If you are a landlord in Hackney and a tenant has moved out, or if you are a tenant who has just moved in and cannot be certain how many copies of the old key are circulating, fitting a fresh cylinder or a new lock set removes that uncertainty entirely. The same logic applies after a burglary, an attempted break-in, or even a messy separation — once you cannot account for every key, the lock itself is the weak point, regardless of how strong the mechanism once was. Letting agents and housing associations across Hackney regularly call us between tenancies precisely because a fresh lock is a clean, auditable security baseline that satisfies both landlord obligations and tenant peace of mind.
Beyond occupancy changes, wear and fatigue matter too. A euro cylinder that has been in daily use for a decade on a uPVC front door may no longer engage smoothly, and a stiff or intermittently failing lock is a lock that may let you down on a cold night. On older properties — and Hackney has no shortage of Victorian and Edwardian conversion flats — a traditional 5-lever mortice deadlock may have absorbed years of use and no longer meets the BS3621 standard that most home insurers now specify. Upgrading at that point is not an optional extra; it is a condition of your cover.
